Many illuminated Celtic manuscripts inspire the work that I create on the lathe. These manuscripts were created to preserve genealogies, history, legends, poetry, Scripture, and stories in both pictures and words. Likewise, with each vessel I turn, I try to communicate ideas in a similar fashion. Using a compass, a ruler, and geometry, I draw ornate, Celtic-style carpet page patterns on paper. Then, I translate these patterns into wood using small segments that I carve, paint, or piece together and then turn on the lathe. The outcome is a bowl-like vessel that captures the look and aesthetic of the manuscripts upon which it is based.
